The Topology of Inquiry

Who asks, who answers, and which ideas survive the crossing — the routing graph of an autonomous research loop, drawn from live instrument data.

Prometheus has routed 131,036 experiments across 262 research domains — 20,093 of them in the last seven days10 — joined by 5,210 directed routing edges2 — 7.62% of all possible connections, organised into 14 communities detected from inquiry flow alone.1 Alongside the routing graph, 40,070 cross-domain transfer events and 19,979 synthesis outputs have been tracked.

Attention is heavily concentrated (traffic Gini 0.777): the 3 hub domains9machine_learning, auto, network_science — hold 18.39% of all experiments. 162 domains are net exporters of inquiry, 97 net importers, and 44% of routing relationships run in both directions. The busiest bridge between communities is calibration (betweenness 0.080), which is also the strongest influence sink — everything routes through it.

Where transfers carry scored outcomes (16,106 verdicts on 2,820 edges4), they confirm at 82%, 8 points above the 74% base rate across all verdicts — consistent with routing selecting productive targets rather than diluting effort. Workers report a mean confidence of 0.79; the calibration layer prices the same results at 0.11 — the loop discounts its own optimism by 7.1×.5

The epistemic ladder6 currently holds 172 established and 75 replicated claims, with 1,283 in dispute and 21,683 candidates awaiting independent retest; statistics leads the promoted tiers with 18 established claims. Under adversarial attack, claims survive at 47% (324 survived, 370 broken; 1,185 narrowed — partial breaks that spawn boundary questions rather than verdicts).

Where does inquiry stay home, and where does it travel? Each matrix row is a community of domains; the shading is the log-scaled routing weight it sends to each column. A deep diagonal means self-contained fields; deep off-diagonal cells are the corridors between them.

Method notes

  1. Communities are detected by greedy modularity optimisation (Clauset–Newman–Moore style) on the routing graph itself. They group domains that exchange inquiry, not domains that share a textbook shelf — a domain can sit in a “medical” community purely because it trades follow-up questions with medical domains.
  2. An edge s → t aggregates routing events in which work in s queued follow-up inquiry in t (queue additions, transfer suggestions); its weight is the event count. Sources: prometheus.db and the classifier routing logs.
  3. Verdicts come from worker hypothesis_supported flags: confirmed / refuted / unknown. Confirm rates exclude unknowns.
  4. Transfer outcomes are counted per edge where transfer evidence was recorded; confirm rate = confirmed ÷ (confirmed + refuted). Centroid-fallback edges are attribution guesses and carry no scored outcomes.
  5. Raw confidence is what workers self-report (hard-capped at 0.85 by the write path); calibrated confidence re-prices results against historical outcome frequencies. Averages are weighted by per-domain result volume.
  6. Claim tiers are the promotion ladder: CANDIDATE → REPLICATED (≥1 independent retest) → ESTABLISHED (survives an adversarial replication attack). DISPUTED claims carry live contradictions and an active arbitration path. Attack outcomes are a trichotomy — survived / narrowed / broken; a NARROWED result is a partial break that spawns a boundary-mapping question and deliberately counts toward neither pole, so survival rate is survived ÷ (survived + broken). Meta-claims (self-measurement) are excluded.
  7. Gini coefficient: 0 = perfectly even attention, 1 = a single domain holds everything. Computed exactly over per-domain values.
  8. Fruchterman–Reingold force embedding with community-ring seeding and overlap relaxation, computed in Python at report-build time (seed 42). No JavaScript layout engine, no CDN — the file is fully self-contained and works offline.
  9. A hub is any domain holding >5% of total experiments.
  10. Momentum counts experiments whose start time falls in the trailing 7 / 30 days at export-build time; heat is the 7-day count as a share of the domain's lifetime experiments — high heat marks a young or resurgent domain, low heat a legacy stock.
